Buying bulk macadamia nuts is a different discipline from buying retail packs. The unit is the tonne and the container, the risks are moisture and consistency, and the savings come from cutting out intermediaries. This guide covers what wholesalers, roasters and processors need to get it right.
Container economics
Macadamia NIS trades by the metric tonne, with a 20ft container holding roughly 18–20 tonnes — the usual minimum order. Buying a full container direct from a grower-exporter removes broker margin and gives you a single, traceable origin. For very large processors, full container loads in one-tonne bulk bags maximise both space and handling efficiency.
Packaging options
- 25kg PP woven bags with an inner PE liner — the standard export pack, palletised, easy to handle for medium-scale operations.
- 1-tonne FIBC (jumbo) bags — best container utilisation for large crackers and integrated processors; available with a discharge spout for hopper feeding.
- Custom / OEM — branded or bespoke pack sizes for established processors (minimum order applies).
Storage and shelf life
This is where bulk buyers get caught out. Properly dried NIS (8–10% moisture) stored cool, dry and off the ground is stable for many months — one reason NIS dominates the bulk trade over kernel. Kernel, once cracked, oxidises faster and needs tighter storage. Always confirm the moisture content on the spec sheet and inspection certificate; high moisture is the single biggest cause of mould and rancidity in a bulk lot.
Consistency is the real value
For a processing line, a predictable grade is worth more than a slightly cheaper but variable one. Inconsistent size or kernel recovery wrecks your yield planning. A single-origin grower-exporter — one farm, one set of cultivars and practices — delivers far more repeatable lots than an aggregator blending many sources. See our specifications guide for the numbers to hold a supplier to.
Lock in counter-season supply
If your domestic supply is seasonal, imported NIS keeps your line running through the off-season. Zimbabwe's March–August harvest fills the gap for many Northern Hemisphere and Asian processors. Agreeing a season-long volume with a grower gives you price certainty and priority allocation.
Bulk grades and pricing
Our bulk export range runs from premium >22mm down to commercial mixed for industrial processing and oil. Indicative pricing per tonne is published on each product page and explained in our macadamia price guide.
