China is the single largest consumer of macadamia nuts in the world, and domestic production in Yunnan falls well short of demand. That gap is filled by imports — and African origins are increasingly central to it. If you're a Chinese importer or processor looking for a dependable macadamia supplier, here's how to think about sourcing from Zimbabwe and the wider region.
Why African origin works for China
Southern Africa's harvest runs March to August, which complements the Chinese consumption calendar and helps smooth supply across the year. African NIS — particularly from high-altitude Zimbabwean orchards — offers the large nut size and high kernel recovery the Chinese market prizes, whether destined for the in-shell snack trade or for cracking into kernel.
The in-shell snack format
China's most distinctive macadamia format is the in-shell snack nut with a pre-cut slit, sold roasted and often flavoured (creamy, salt-and-pepper, matcha). This demands large, uniform, attractive nuts with clean shells — exactly the profile of our premium >22mm grade. Buyers serving this segment should prioritise size grading and shell appearance, not just kernel recovery.
What to specify
- Size: >20mm and >22mm grades for the snack market; mixed grades for cracking.
- Moisture: 8–10% for in-shell.
- Shell condition: clean, unblemished shells for slit-and-roast products.
- Kernel recovery: 30%+ where the nuts will be cracked.

Logistics and documentation
From Zimbabwe, containers move overland to Beira or Durban and ship to major Chinese ports. A reliable supplier quotes CIF to your port and provides the full document set: phytosanitary certificate, certificate of origin, fumigation certificate, bill of lading, packing list and commercial invoice, with SGS/Intertek inspection available on request. Confirm your customs broker's GACC requirements for tree nuts before the first shipment.
Build the relationship the right way
The Chinese market rewards consistency — the same grade, the same appearance, container after container. That's far easier to achieve with a single-origin grower-exporter than with a broker blending multiple farms. We grow, dry and grade on one estate, so the snack nuts in your tenth container match your first.
Start with a sample and a trial container. Use our 12-question supplier checklist to vet any candidate, then send a trade enquiry with your grade, volume and destination port. We respond within 24 hours.
