A growing body of scientific evidence supports the heart-health benefits of macadamia nuts. Their unique fatty acid profile makes them one of the most heart-friendly nuts available.

The Science

Macadamia nuts contain the highest amount of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) of any tree nut, at roughly 59g per 100g. These are the same heart-healthy fats found in olive oil. Research published in the Journal of Nutrition found that participants who added macadamias to their diet for five weeks saw significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Beyond Cholesterol

The benefits extend beyond cholesterol management. Macadamia nuts contain palmitoleic acid (omega-7), a rare fatty acid that may reduce inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity. They also provide magnesium, which supports healthy blood pressure, and antioxidants like tocotrienols (a form of vitamin E) that protect against oxidative stress.

How Much to Eat

Studies suggest that consuming around 40-90g of macadamia nuts per day delivers measurable cardiovascular benefits. That's roughly a small handful as a daily snack. Because they're calorie-dense, they're best enjoyed as a replacement for less healthy snacks rather than an addition.
