For every kilogram of macadamia kernel, roughly two kilograms of shell are produced. This waste product is increasingly being recognised as a valuable resource in its own right.
Biomass Energy
Macadamia shells have a calorific value similar to coal, making them an excellent biomass fuel. Many macadamia processing facilities now burn shells to power their operations, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Some generate enough energy to sell surplus electricity back to the grid.
Activated Carbon
The dense, hard structure of macadamia shells makes them ideal for producing activated carbon, used in water filtration, air purification, and gold extraction. Research has shown that macadamia shell activated carbon performs comparably to coconut shell carbon, the current industry standard.
Agricultural Uses
Crushed macadamia shell makes excellent garden mulch. It's long-lasting, attractive, suppresses weeds, and slowly releases nutrients as it decomposes. The shells can also be used as a growing medium component in potting mixes.
Industrial Abrasives
Ground macadamia shell is used as a natural, biodegradable abrasive in industrial cleaning and surface preparation. Unlike synthetic abrasives, it doesn't harm the environment and is increasingly specified for use in sensitive settings.
Cosmetics
Finely ground macadamia shell powder is used in exfoliating skincare products as a natural alternative to plastic microbeads. The irregular, gentle abrasive texture makes it effective yet kind to skin.
