Africa's macadamia story is one of rapid growth and enormous potential. The continent already accounts for a significant share of global production, and this is set to increase dramatically over the coming decade.
South Africa Leading the Way
South Africa has become one of the world's top macadamia producers, with new plantings continuing to come into production. The country's industry is highly professional, with advanced cracking and processing facilities that produce kernel of exceptional quality.
East African Growth
Kenya and Malawi have established macadamia industries that provide income for smallholder farmers as well as larger commercial operations. The altitude and climate in Kenya's central highlands are particularly suited to macadamia production.
Zimbabwe's Promise
Our own experience in Chipinge demonstrates Zimbabwe's immense potential. The Umkondo region offers ideal conditions: altitude, rainfall, and fertile soils. As more orchards mature, Zimbabwe could become a significant exporter of premium macadamia nuts.
Challenges and Opportunities
Infrastructure, access to finance, and market access remain challenges for African producers. However, growing global demand, particularly from China, and increasing recognition of African macadamia quality are creating exciting opportunities for the continent's farmers.
